The Brief

To take this 20 year old aged website into the digital era and drive high levels of sales from organic SEO for as many keywords as possible.

The Solution

The existing website had 20,000 pages including product pages, so we had to start with a huge 301 redirect mapping exercise as the URL structure was a complete mess. So I, Myles, did a complete URL re-structure and culled 17,000 pages that was both cannibalizing each other and many was a duplicate product, say with a black handle not a white handle. Crawl budget was wasted, so I knew by culling lots of pages it would make the site easier to crawl for Google and stop pages competing for the same keywords.

I then knew that once the site was migrated that we would experience some rank drops as Google settles down, however in just 3 months we had made the recovery after a very small drop. This recovery was on an upwards trajectory so at this point we introduced some PR and backlinks (relevant backlinks and contextual) so announce the new ownership of the website and re-launch.

Since then, the website has been developed and now has over 14,000 keywords, with 506 keywords at position 1-3 on Google UK at the time of writing.

We have tripled our backlinks from 150 to 450 in just 2 years, thanks to Myles’ database of links in the home improvement industry he’s created in the last 6 years. We know exactly what websites to use for links in the home improvement industry and have direct links now to the media journalists on some of the most popular industry media sites.

Non-branded traffic increased from 3,088 per month to 19,667 per month in just 14 months, meaning lead generation was firing on all cylinders, and SEO played a large part in the success of the sales growth.
