ChatGPT Optimisation

ChatGPT Optimisation to Put Your Name in the Answer, Not a Rival's

ChatGPT optimisation is the ChatGPT workstream of our Generative Engine Optimisation programme: getting your business found, cited and named when a buyer asks ChatGPT to recommend a company like yours. It can also be scoped as a standalone project. Our senior SEOs work on both ways it answers, what it already knows about you and what it finds when it searches.

Who this is for

When ChatGPT optimisation is worth doing

  • ChatGPT names a rival instead

Someone asks ChatGPT for a boiler installer, electrician or renewable energy company in their area, and a competitor's name comes back. When it searches, it cites only a few sources and leaves the rest out.

  • Ranked on Google, absent in ChatGPT

Good Google positions do not carry across to ChatGPT by themselves. When it searches, it draws on Bing's index, and a robots.txt rule can shut out OpenAI's crawlers without anyone noticing.

  • ChatGPT gets your details wrong

ChatGPT mentions you, but with services you no longer offer, places you do not cover or a muddled summary. When your site and your listings elsewhere disagree, it has no single version to repeat.

  • Buyers shortlist in ChatGPT first

Before they ring anyone, some buyers ask ChatGPT to narrow the field: which installer, which product to buy. It is common among trades and installers, online shops fielding comparison questions and training providers preparing for AI answers.

What we do

  • Part of our GEO programme

Our Generative Engine Optimisation programme covers ChatGPT plus Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. AI Visibility Audits set a baseline across all of them. LLM Optimisation goes deeper on crawler set-up.

Our plan for Future Training, a heat pump and solar PV course provider that launched a brand-new site in 2026, put ChatGPT alongside Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and Claude. The work rested on entity-based SEO and FAQ-rich pages with direct answers.

  • Where ChatGPT's answers come from

ChatGPT answers in two ways. By default it replies from its training, with no live lookup and no citations. When it searches, it splits the question into several narrower searches, reads a handful of pages and cites the few sources it can attribute claims to.

That search draws on Bing's index, so a site poorly indexed in Bing can be missing however well it ranks on Google. ChatGPT's citations tend to go to the most extractable content from a recognisable business on a trusted source. So the ChatGPT ranking factors worth your time come down to two jobs: be known, and be easy to find and quote when it searches.

What ChatGPT optimisation covers

Our ChatGPT optimisation services have five strands; your baseline decides which gets most attention.

  1. Crawler access

We check that robots.txt lets GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot in, key content is server-rendered HTML rather than client-side JavaScript, and your sitemap is clean and current.

  2. Bing indexing

We set up Bing Webmaster Tools, clear crawl errors and track your Bing rankings for core queries, which say more about ChatGPT search than any Google Search Console report.

  3. Answer-first pages

Pages you want quoted open with the direct answer and carry FAQs drawn from real buyer questions, FAQPage and Article schema and a visible updated date, refreshed at least quarterly.

  4. One consistent description

Your name, services and locations read the same on your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles, so the model holds one clear picture of you.

  5. Independent mentions

Trade press, comparison articles and review platforms, plus our Reddit GEO and Quora GEO work, give it independent sources to weigh you against. A few relevant mentions beat many generic backlinks.

  • How we track your ChatGPT visibility

Every month the prompts you approved run against both its answers from training and its web search answers, using dedicated tracking tools and prompt scripts we wrote ourselves. Each run logs whether you are named or linked, how prominently you appear and which rivals share the answer. It sits beside your Google rankings and leads, with a note on what changed. A model update can remove a citation with nothing changed on your site, so tracking never stops.

How it works

How a ChatGPT optimisation project runs

Because ChatGPT searches live, structural fixes can change its citations within weeks. Third-party coverage takes longer, typically three to six months.

  • Step 1 of 4: Agree prompts and baseline

We build the prompt set from keyword data, People Also Ask and your customers' questions, you approve it, and we run it against named competitors, from training and with web search.

  • Step 2 of 4: Clear the path to ChatGPT

Crawler rules, Bing indexing, server-rendered content and the sitemap come first. Strong pages earn no citations while the crawlers are blocked, and these fixes are often the quickest win.

  • Step 3 of 4: Rebuild the quotable pages

Once the crawlers can reach you, we restructure your top pages around your buyers' prompts, then align your business description everywhere and link related pages into a topic cluster.

  • Step 4 of 4: Earn mentions, track monthly

We build the third-party coverage ChatGPT checks you against, rerun the prompts each month and adjust as the model changes, reporting what moved, what did not and why.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Not the way you rank on Google. ChatGPT either answers from training or searches the web and cites a few sources. Ranking there means being findable, through Bing's index and crawlers you have not blocked; quotable, through direct answers; and known well enough to be named. Nobody can guarantee a place.

Through what other sources say about you: trade press, comparison articles, reviews and community threads carry much of the weight. Your own site is only part of what ChatGPT draws on, so consistent details everywhere matter too. Ads sit apart from the answer, so a place in it cannot be bought.

With a fixed prompt set run on a schedule, not occasional checks by hand. ChatGPT is probabilistic, so one answer proves little, and citations move after model updates. We record answers from its training and answers from its web search separately, because they behave differently.

Yes, as a research or writing tool, but that is a different job. ChatGPT optimisation, sometimes called ChatGPT SEO, aims to get your business into its answers. AI tools help us check visibility and speed up routine work, but experienced SEOs make every decision.

No. ChatGPT's search draws on Bing's index, so the crawlable, well-structured pages that SEO produces are what it finds and quotes. ChatGPT optimisation adds its own work on top, such as crawler rules, Bing checks and monthly prompt tracking, and one team runs both for our clients.

One that puts senior people on your account, tests against your real buyer prompts and is honest about limits. Everyone on our accounts has 8+ years' experience. Ask how they measure, and be wary of anyone promising ChatGPT will name you: nobody controls its answers.
